Security Camera Siren and Active Deterrence Features

Active deterrence — a camera that does not just record an intruder but responds with a siren, strobe light, or audible warning — shifts the camera from passive surveillance to an active security device. The behavioral rationale is supported by burglary research: a 2013 study by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Department of Criminal Justice found that 83% of convicted burglars reported checking for alarms or cameras before attempting entry, and 60% reported that the presence of an alarm would cause them to abandon the attempt and target a different property. A camera that announces its presence with a visible deterrent response amplifies this effect.

Siren specifications. Built-in sirens in consumer cameras output 80–100 dBA at 1 meter — approximately the volume of a smoke alarm or loud lawnmower. At this level, the siren is audible throughout the property and to adjacent neighbors, and it is physically uncomfortable to remain near the camera. The Eufy SoloCam S340 includes a 100 dBA siren that can be triggered manually or automatically by person detection. The Ring Floodlight Cam Pro combines a 110 dBA siren with the floodlights, creating a dual audible and visual deterrent. The practical concern with automated siren activation is false triggers: a siren that activates on a raccoon or wind-blown branch at 2 AM alienates neighbors and conditions the user to disable the feature entirely. Person-detection-gated siren activation reduces false triggers to an acceptable rate in most residential settings.

Two-way talk as deterrence. A voice warning delivered through the camera's speaker — "You are being recorded. Please leave the property." — is a less aggressive deterrent that serves the same behavioral function as a siren: it communicates that the intruder has been detected and that a response may follow. The voice warning has the advantage of not disturbing neighbors when triggered, and it can be delivered manually through the app, allowing the user to assess the situation before deciding on the level of response. Cameras from Reolink and Eufy support pre-recorded voice messages that play automatically on person detection — a "virtual security guard" that requires no user intervention.
