Security Camera PTZ Auto-Tracking: How Subject Following Works

Volume I  ·  May 2026  ·  197 words

PTZ auto-tracking — the camera automatically pans and tilts to follow a moving subject — combines motion detection, object classification, and mechanical control. When AI detection identifies a person or vehicle, it calculates position, estimates velocity, and commands pan/tilt motors to keep the subject centered. The Reolink TrackMix PTZ and Eufy Floodlight Cam E340 include auto-tracking. Performance degrades with rapid direction changes or when multiple subjects move through the frame. The tracking algorithm uses a predictive model to estimate position during brief occlusions, but occlusions longer than 1-2 seconds typically cause tracking loss. After the subject leaves, the camera returns to a preset home position. Auto-tracking consumes more power — for battery cameras, extended tracking can deplete the battery faster than rated standby life. For driveway and front-yard monitoring where subjects follow predictable paths, auto-tracking provides detail — zooming in on a license plate or face — that a fixed wide-angle camera cannot capture.
