Security Camera Weather Ratings: IP65 vs IP66 vs IP67 Protection
Volume I · May 2026 · 226 words
The IP rating on an outdoor security camera specifies dust and water protection. The first digit (6) indicates complete dust protection — no dust ingress. The second digit indicates water protection. IP65: protected against water jets from any direction (simulated rain, hose spray). IP66: protected against powerful water jets. IP67: protected against temporary immersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is IP66 rated; the Eufy SoloCam S340 is IP65 rated. For typical outdoor installation under an eave — protected from direct rain but exposed to wind-driven moisture — IP65 is adequate. For fully exposed installation with no overhead protection, IP66 provides a safety margin. IP67 is typically reserved for cameras intended for marine or flood-prone environments. The camera's cable connections — power, Ethernet, solar panel — are the most common water ingress points regardless of the camera body's IP rating. Weatherproof cable connectors with rubber gaskets, and orienting connections to point downward to prevent water from following the cable into the connector, are standard installation practices that complement the camera's rated protection.
