Security Camera Cold Weather Performance

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity and discharge capability at low temperatures due to increased electrolyte viscosity and reduced ion mobility at the electrode interface. A battery that lasts 3 months in summer may last 3 weeks in winter. This is the most common reason battery-powered security cameras fail during the season when security concerns are often highest — dark winter evenings with extended hours of darkness.
Capacity loss. At −10°C (14°F), a lithium-ion battery's usable capacity is approximately 50–60% of its rated capacity at 25°C. At −20°C (−4°F), usable capacity drops to 30–40%. The capacity loss is reversible — the battery recovers when warmed — but the practical effect is that winter battery life is half to one-third of summer battery life. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is rated for operation from −10°C to 55°C; below −10°C, the camera may shut down to protect the battery from permanent damage. The Eufy SoloCam S340 carries a similar −20°C to 50°C operating range, which covers most inhabited regions but excludes extreme cold climates where winter temperatures routinely drop below −20°C.
Charging in cold weather. Lithium batteries cannot be safely charged below 0°C — charging at sub-freezing temperatures causes metallic lithium plating on the anode, permanently reducing capacity. Solar panels connected to cold cameras may supply power but the camera's battery management system will refuse to charge until the battery temperature rises above freezing. The result is a camera that operates on battery power through the night and cannot recharge during cold daylight hours — a failure mode that manifests as a camera that works for a few days after a warm spell and then dies during a cold snap. The only reliable winter solution for sub-freezing climates is a wired (PoE or AC) camera that does not depend on battery power. For battery cameras in moderate winter climates (rarely below −5°C), positioning the camera on a south-facing wall where solar gain warms the housing can extend the temperature window for charging.
