Humidifier Built-In Hygrometer Accuracy
Volume I · May 2026 · PLACEHOLDER words
The humidity sensor built into a humidifier controls when the unit runs and when it idles. If the sensor overestimates humidity by 10% RH, the humidifier shuts off prematurely and the room remains dry. If it underestimates by 10%, the humidifier over-humidifies, potentially reaching condensation levels. Consumer-grade humidity sensors — resistive or capacitive polymer sensors — have an accuracy of ±5% RH when new, but they drift over time as dust and mineral residue accumulate on the sensor element. The Levoit LV600HH includes a built-in humidistat with an accuracy specification of ±5% RH. In practice, the sensor's placement on the humidifier body — near the mist outlet — means it measures the humidity of the air immediately surrounding the unit, which may be 5-15% higher than the room average because the mist has not yet dispersed. A separate hygrometer placed across the room provides a more accurate room-average reading than the built-in sensor. The Govee Bluetooth hygrometer ($12-15) provides a calibration reference and can trigger smart plugs for humidifier control via IFTTT or home automation systems — bypassing the built-in humidistat entirely.
