Humidifier Essential Oil Compatibility: Diffuser Trays and Material Safety

Volume I  ·  May 2026  ·  201 words

Some humidifiers include an essential oil tray or pad — a separate compartment from the water tank where a few drops of essential oil are placed. The oil is dispersed by the humidifier's airflow without entering the water tank or the ultrasonic transducer. This design prevents oil residue from coating the transducer (which reduces mist output), the water tank (which traps bacteria), and the internal air path (which accumulates sticky residue over time). The Levoit LV600HH and some Honeywell models include dedicated oil trays. Adding oil directly to the water tank is not recommended — the oil can degrade plastic components, clog the ultrasonic transducer, and aerosolize concentrated oil droplets that may irritate the respiratory tract. A separate ultrasonic essential oil diffuser ($10-20) with a smaller water reservoir designed for oil dispersion is a better solution than attempting to combine humidification and aromatherapy in a single device, particularly for users who want to use oils regularly.
