Floodlight Camera Systems: Integrated Lighting and Security Deterrence
Volume I · May 2026 · 418 words
A floodlight camera combines a security camera with motion-activated LED floodlights in a single housing. The lighting serves two functions: illuminating the scene for better video capture and acting as a behavioral deterrent — an intruder who is suddenly floodlit is more likely to retreat than one who remains in darkness. The deterrence effect is well-documented in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) literature, where sudden illumination is classified as an "access control" mechanism that increases the perceived risk of detection.
Lumen output and coverage. Floodlight cameras typically produce 2,000–3,000 lumens from an array of LEDs with a color temperature of 3,000–5,000K. At 3,000 lumens, the illumination is approximately equivalent to two 100W incandescent floodlights — sufficient to light a two-car driveway or a 30×30 foot backyard area to a level where facial features are distinguishable at 15–20 feet. The Ring Floodlight Cam Pro outputs 2,000 lumens with a 140-degree horizontal beam spread. The Eufy Floodlight Cam E340 outputs 2,000 lumens from a dual-panel design that allows independent aiming of each panel for customized coverage. Higher lumen output improves video quality at night but increases light pollution and may disturb neighbors if the floodlight activates frequently due to false motion triggers.
Hardwired vs solar. Floodlight cameras draw 20–40W when the lights are active and 5–10W in standby with the camera operating. This continuous power draw makes them unsuitable for battery-only operation — all floodlight cameras require hardwired AC power. Installation replaces an existing outdoor light fixture and requires a standard junction box with a hot, neutral, and ground wire — the same wiring as the fixture being replaced. For locations without existing wiring, a solar-powered separate floodlight paired with a battery camera is the practical alternative, though the deterrence effect is reduced because the light and camera are not integrated into a single obvious security device.
