Dehumidifier Defrost Cycles

If a compressor dehumidifier is operating in a cool space — below approximately 65°F — you may notice it periodically goes quiet while the fan continues to run, then the compressor restarts after a few minutes. This is the automatic defrost cycle, and it is normal operation, not a malfunction. The defrost cycle protects the compressor from damage and restores dehumidification efficiency, but it also means the dehumidifier is spending a portion of its runtime not dehumidifying — an efficiency loss that increases as ambient temperature drops.

Why frost forms. The evaporator coil must be colder than the dew point of the incoming air for moisture to condense. At 80°F and 60% RH, the dew point is approximately 65°F, and the evaporator can operate at 40–45°F — well above freezing — while still condensing moisture effectively. At 60°F and 60% RH, the dew point is approximately 46°F, and the evaporator must operate at 30–35°F to drive condensation — below freezing. Ice crystals begin to form on the coil surface, blocking airflow and insulating the coil from the air stream, further reducing the already marginal temperature difference. The Frigidaire 50-pint dehumidifier and most consumer compressor units include an automatic defrost cycle that activates when a thermistor on the evaporator coil detects temperatures approaching freezing.

The defrost mechanism is simple: the compressor shuts off, the fan continues to run, and room-temperature air passing over the iced coil melts the frost within 3–8 minutes. The compressor restarts when the coil temperature rises above approximately 38°F. In a 60°F basement, a dehumidifier may spend 20–40% of its runtime in defrost mode — meaning a unit rated for 50 pints per day at 80°F may only remove 25–30 pints per day at 60°F. If a dehumidifier is defrosting more than 50% of the time, the space is too cold for efficient compressor-based dehumidification, and a desiccant dehumidifier is the appropriate alternative.
