Espresso Machine Cleaning Routine: Backflushing, Descaling, and Gasket Care

Volume I  ·  May 2026  ·  231 words

Espresso machine maintenance includes daily, weekly, and periodic tasks that prevent the accumulation of coffee oils (which turn rancid and impart bitter flavors), mineral scale (which restricts water flow and reduces heating efficiency), and worn gaskets (which cause pressure leaks at the group head). Daily: flush the group head with water after the last shot, wipe the shower screen, and purge the steam wand. Weekly: backflush with water (for machines with a three-way solenoid valve — Gaggia, Rancilio, Breville) to remove oils from the group head and valve. Monthly: backflush with espresso machine detergent (Cafiza or similar) to dissolve accumulated oils. Every 3-6 months: descale with citric acid or a commercial descaler to remove mineral scale from the boiler and water pathways — frequency depends on water hardness. The Cafiza cleaning tablets and Dezcal descaler are the standard products. The group gasket — the rubber seal between the portafilter and the group head — hardens over 6-18 months and must be replaced when leaking occurs around the portafilter during extraction. Replacement is a $5-10 part and a 5-minute job using a gasket pick or flathead screwdriver.
