Air Purifier Filter Change Indicators: Hours-Based vs Sensor-Based
Volume I · May 2026 · 201 words
Filter change indicators tell the user when to replace filters. Timer-based indicators count fan-on hours and illuminate after a preset interval — typically 2,500-4,000 hours for HEPA and 800-1,500 hours for carbon. The Coway AP-1512HH uses a timer-based indicator that tracks actual fan-on hours, not calendar time. Sensor-based indicators — found on some Levoit and Blueair models — measure the pressure drop across the filter or use an optical sensor to assess filter loading. Timer-based indicators are conservative: they illuminate based on average conditions and may signal replacement before the filter is actually loaded. Sensor-based indicators are more accurate for the specific environment but add cost and complexity. For both types, the indicator is a reminder, not an absolute — if air quality is satisfactory and airflow is adequate, extending the filter change interval beyond the indicator signal is reasonable. If airflow has noticeably decreased or odors are not being controlled, replace the filter regardless of indicator status.
